The candidates seeking the Republican nomination for Michigan's 7th congressional district are not far apart on the issues. Tim Walberg, Brian Rooney and Marvin Carlson presented their platforms at a forum Wednesday in Lansing. The three men all agreed job creation is the most important issue facing this state. Each supports cutting federal spending, lowering taxes and reducing government regulation.

But each candidate tried to separate themselves from the others by highlighting their life experiences. Tim Walberg said he's the only candidate voters can be sure is a true conservative, and pointed to his 16-year record in the state legislature and 2 years in Congress.

Brian Rooney is a Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq. He also worked as an attorney at the Thomas More Law Center, a conservative law firm in Ann Arbor. He said those experiences give him insight the others don't have.

"I believe background and narrative are very important. That gives you wisdom and wisdom allow you to craft or be part of legislation that not only looks good on paper, but you know works in the real world," Rooney said.

Businessman Marvin Carlson pointed out he's the only candidate who has actually created jobs.

The candidates have two more debates before the August 3rd primary. They'll be held on July 20 in Jackson and July 22 in Battle Creek.
