Detroit to demolish upward of 3,000 houses in 2010

DETROIT –

Detroit officials say between 2,500 and 3,000 vacant homes are expected to be demolished this year in the city.

Planning officials told the City Council on Monday that the houses will be torn down with about $14 million in federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program and other funds.

Officials say it costs about $10,000 to demolish each single-family home. The city also is pursuing options to collect the cost of demolition from property owners.

Storm dumps 8 inches snow on parts of Michigan

DETROIT –

A winter storm that dumped 8 inches of snow on parts of southern lower Michigan has closed dozens of schools, caused numerous spinouts and left drivers to battle slippery, snarled roads.

Heavy, wet snow began falling late Sunday night and intensified during Monday's morning commute before it was expected to diminish later in the day.

Ill will for slain activist as Owosso trial nears

OWOSSO, MI –

Jury selection could be difficult Tuesday as trial opens for a man charged with killing an anti-abortion activist and a business owner in Owosso.

Shiawassee County prosecutors have warned that it will be "almost impossible" to pick jurors who don't have opinions of one of the victims, James Pouillon, who aggressively protested abortion for years in Owosso.

Judge Gerald Lostracco won't move the trial unless he can't find a fair-minded jury.

East Lansing seeks comments on fair housing

UPDATE: The city of East Lansing is re-scheduling tonight's fair housing workshop. Workshops are now scheduled for February 24th and March 1st at the East Lansing Public Library.

East Lansing officials are gathering public input on potential barriers to fair housing. The city is hosting two workshops on the subject this week.

MI lawmakers to hear update on PA prisoners

LANSING, MI –

Officials from the Department of Corrections are scheduled to brief state lawmakers Tuesday on the transfer of Pennsylvania prisoners to a prison in Muskegon.

Corrections officials told a panel of state Senators last week that the transfer of Pennsylvania prisoners to Michigan was going to happen before the end of the week.

Mich. civil rights chief dies of cancer

LANSING, MI – State officials say Michigan Department of Civil Rights Director Kelvin W. Scott has died of cancer.

State Civil Rights Commission Chairman Matthew Wesaw says the 47-year-old Scott died Saturday.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm appointed Scott to the rights commission
in 2004. He was named the civil rights agency's director last year.

Granholm called Scott "a great champion" of the civil rights cause in a statement issued Sunday.

Michigan St. women top Ohio State in OT

COLUMBUS, OH – Brittney Thomas scored 19 points, including a basket to trigger an 8-0 run and two clinching free throws in overtime, to lead Michigan State to a 71-68 victory over
No. 7 Ohio State on Sunday.

After Ohio State (26-4, 14-3 Big Ten) cut the lead to a point on Samantha Prahalis' 3-pointer, Thomas hit two foul shots with 15.3 seconds left.

Sarah Schulze's 3-point attempt with 2 seconds left was short and off the mark.

No. 9 Buckeyes beat No. 11 Michigan St. men 74-67

EAST LANSING, MI – Evan Turner scored 20 points and No. 9 Ohio State earned a 74-67 win over No. 11 Michigan State on Sunday.

William Buford had 17 points for the Buckeyes (21-7, 11-4 Big Ten), who pulled into a second-place tie with Michigan State in the conference.

Both teams trail Purdue by a half-game in the conference standings.

Hamilton's 27 leads Pistons to OT win over Spurs

AUBURN HILLS, MI – Richard Hamilton scored 27 points and Rodney Stuckey added 20 to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 109-101 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in overtime on Sunday.

Manu Ginobili's layup tied the game at 93 with 27.5 seconds left, and the Pistons missed two game-winning shots at the end of regulation.

San Antonio started the extra period with a one-point lead because Hamilton was called for a technical foul during the break after regulation.
