Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is questioning why his main opponent in the Democratic race for governor isn't more supportive of the new federal health care law.
Bernero said in a Thursday news release that House Speaker Andy Dillon's measured support of the changes puts him close to being in the same camp as Republicans such as Attorney General Mike Cox, who's challenging the law in court. Cox also is running for governor.
EAST LANSING, MI – Former Michigan State defensive tackle Oren Wilson has been sentenced to 21 days in jail on misdemeanor assault and battery charges in connection with a Nov. 22 on-campus fight with fraternity members.
The 22-year-old also was ordered Wednesday to perform community service as part of his sentence. He's the last of 11 current or former Michigan State football players who pleaded guilty in the case to be sentenced.
Wilson was sentenced in East Lansing District Court.
LAKELAND, FL – Justin Verlander was roughed up for five runs, three earned, over 5 1-3 innings in his final start of spring training, though the Detroit Tigers downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5 Wednesday.
Verlander, who will face Kansas City's Zach Greinke on Monday, allowed 10 hits and walked two as his spring ERA ballooned to 5.48.
Verlander said he felt ready to go and was using the game to make adjustments he would not normally make in the regular season.
Governor Granholm visited a hospital in Lansing to sign an executive order that will start preparing Michigan for the new federal healthcare law. The governor created a healthcare council and ombudsman to start making plans and informing people about their options.
The state House Judiciary Committee met Wednesday in Lansing while the Legislature continues its two-week spring break. The lawmakers approved a measure that would require juvenile fingerprints and arrest cards to be thrown out in certain circumstances.

Detention hearings for members of a Christian militia group who authorities say plotted to incite a violent revolt are recessed until Thursday.
