East Lansing, MI – WKAR Sports Director Earle Robinson opened the mic on his first call-in show 25 years ago. On April 1, 1985, "SportsTalk AM 870" debuted on WKAR. Over the years, Earle and co-host Rob Bennett have chatted with thousands of sports lovers and luminaries, from Magic Johnson to Tom Izzo. WKAR's Kevin Lavery asked Earle how it all began.

Cabrera homers twice, Tigers outslug Orioles 10-9

SARASOTA, FL – Miguel Cabrera hit two long home runs, Alex Avila singled in the tie-breaking run in the ninth inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-9 Tuesday.

Miguel Tejada went 4 for 4 for the Orioles, hitting three doubles to raise his batting average 64 points to .255.

Both of Cabrera's home runs came off Brad Bergesen. After hitting a two-run drive to left in the first inning, he added a solo shot in the fifth that cleared the high wall in center.

Red Wings beat Oilers 5-4 after wasting 4-0 lead

DETROIT – Brad Stuart scored with 1:07 left to lift Detroit to a 5-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night after the Red Wings blew a 4-0 second-period lead.

Johan Franzen had a goal and an assist, and Andreas Lilja, Nicklas Kronwall and Drew Miller also scored for Detroit, which won its sixth straight. Jimmy Howard stopped 22 shots.

Tom Gilbert scored twice, Mike Comrie added a goal and an assist, and Zack Stortini also scored for Edmonton. Jeff Deslauriers made 39 saves.

New loan law could help MI college students

UNDATED –

The new federal student loan law should help thousands of Michigan residents pay for college.

President Obama signed the legislation on Tuesday which cuts banks out of
the student loan business. The program will now be run the federal government.

MSU's Lucas has surgery

EAST LANSING, MI –

Michigan State's trip to the NCAA Final Four was diverted to an operating room Tuesday.

Star point guard Kalin Lucas underwent surgery to repair his Achilles tendon. The team won its last two tournament games without him.

Coach Tom Izzo says he hopes Lucas is well enough to be with the team in Indianapolis.

9th militia suspect faces charges in Mich.

DETROIT –

The last of nine people charged with plotting to kill police has been arraigned in a Detroit federal court.

Twenty-one-year-old Joshua Matthew Stone was arraigned Tuesday before a U.S. District Court magistrate and was ordered held without bond until a hearing Wednesday.

Stone peacefully surrendered Monday night in Hillsdale County's Wheatland Township.

Poll: Michigan has some of worst roads in the country

LANSING, MI –

Truck drivers say Michigan has some of the worst roads in the country. A new survey in Overdrive Magazine shows Michigan ranks second for overall-worst roads. That's up from the number-three ranking last year.

Michigan roads are seldom referred to in glowing terms, and the survey of truck drivers is no exception. The survey ranked Michigan second only to Pennsylvania for the bad condition of roads.

FBI: Last of 9 suspects in plot caught in Mich.

WHEATLAND TOWNSHIP, MI – The FBI says the last of nine people charged with plotting to kill police has been apprehended after a search in rural Michigan.

Andrew Arena, head of the FBI's field office in Detroit, says Joshua Matthew Stone surrendered about 8 p.m. Monday at a home in Hillsdale County about 30 miles from the site of weekend raid.

Arena said Stone was in a house with five adults and a child. Arena says they all were there willingly and weren't being held hostage.

Granholm defends sales tax expansion

LANSING, MI – While the Legislature's on its spring break, Governor Granholm is still pushing for her budget plans. The governor wants to extend Michigan's sales tax to cover services and not just products. She'd make the tax more palatable by lowering the rate to five and a half percent. The governor says the revenue would help avert a new round of cuts to schools.
