MSU Formula Racing Team at Detroit auto show

DETROIT, MI –

At one of the entrances to the Cobo Center in Detroit, the first display people attending the North American International Auto Show will see is a booth for the Michigan State University Formula Racing Team.

The team of collegians is affiliated with the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Members get to do more than work on racecars; they also spend time with industry bigshots and car fanatics.

Penn State upsets No. 20 Michigan State 68-60

STATE COLLEGE, PA – Tyra Grant had 23 points to help Penn State beat No. 20 Michigan State 68-60 on Sunday, handing the Spartans their third consecutive loss.

Alex Bentley added 14 points for the surging Nittany Lions (13-4, 5-2 Big Ten), who earned their fourth straight victory and already have surpassed their win total from last season.

Jasmine Thomas had 19 points and Kalisha Keane scored 14 for Michigan State (11-7, 2-5).

Blackhawks beat Red wings 4-3 in shootout

DETROIT – Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp scored in the shootout to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.

Troy Brouwer had a goal and an assist and Patrick Kane and Sharp also had goals for Chicago. Antti Niemi stopped 35 shots.

Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist and Patrick Eaves also scored for Detroit. Pavel Datsyuk had two assists, and Jimmy Howard made 26 saves.

Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi scored for Detroit in the shootout.

#8 Spartans take out Illinois 73-63

East Lansing, MI – Tom Izzo put Kalin Lucas on the bench a couple of minutes into Saturday's game.

The Michigan State coach heard what he wanted from his star player, then liked what he saw.

When Izzo didn't like how Lucas was leading the team last month, he held him out of a practice and didn't start him a game.

Lucas' lackluster start Saturday put him next to Izzo after two missed shots led to the defending Big Ten champions trailing by six points.

Red Wings lose 3-2 to Dallas in shoot out

Dallas Tx – Steve Ott scored a controversial goal in the sixth round of the shootout, and the Dallas Stars ended a three-game skid with a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

Dallas goalie Alex Auld and Detroit's Jimmy Howard were perfect before Ott backhanded a shot through Howard's pads.

Howard pulled the puck off the goal line, but after a lengthy video review officials ruled that Ott's shot had crossed the line.

State Senator wants monthly schools attendance count

LANSING, MI –

The chairman of the state Senate Education Committee says schools should be required to report student counts every month to the Department of Education.

AUDIO:
State Senator Wayne Kuipers says a monthly count would eliminate a lot of problems with charter schools and public schools arguing over stolen students. The schools receive payments based on the student counts. Kuipers says the schools put too much energy in the bi-annual count.

EPA, Michigan sign order on dioxin cleanup plan

MIDLAND, MI –

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state of Michigan have signed an administrative order on a road map for the planned cleanup of dioxin contamination near the Dow Chemical Co. plant in Midland.

The signing was announced Friday. The agreement with Dow Chemical Co. outlines the next steps in a Superfund evaluation of contamination in the Tittabawassee River, the Saginaw River and Saginaw Bay and their floodplains.
