Lugnuts sweep Hot Rods

BOWLING GREEN – The Lansing Lugnuts battered the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 9-3, last night to finish off a three-game sweep on Jackson Field.

All four of the Lugnuts' series this season have ended in sweeps, dropping three games at Dayton, winning three at Great Lakes, losing three to Lake County, and topping Bowling Green in three straight.

Tonight the Lugnuts start a three-game series at Fort Wayne.

Red Wings' Howard says he needs short-term memory

DETROIT – Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard says he needs to have short-term memory after giving up four goals in two straight games to the Phoenix Coyotes.

Detroit coach Mike Babcock said Monday he's confident the rookie will bounce back.

The two-time defending Western Conference champions will host Phoenix in Game 4 Tuesday night, trailing 2-1 in the first-round series.

Pineiro tames Tigers in Angels' 2-0 win

ANAHEIM, CA – Joel Pineiro pitched into the eighth inning and Fernando Rodney got the save against his former team, closing out the Los Angeles Angels' 2-0 win over the Detroit Tigers
on Monday night.

The Angels won their fourth straight after beginning the season 2-6.

Pineiro (2-1) allowed nine hits in 7 1-3 innings. He struck out four and walked none.

Ex-NAACP chief Hooks lies in repose in Detroit

DETROIT –

The body of longtime NAACP head Benjamin L. Hooks is lying in repose at a Detroit church where he preached for 30 years even while serving as a Tennessee judge, Federal Communications commissioner and national civil rights leader.

An honor guard carried Hooks' casket into Greater New Mount Moriah Baptist Church Monday afternoon, and mourners lined up out the door to pass by in respect.

Hooks was pastor at the church from 1964 to 1994. He flew to Detroit twice a month to minister there.

MI House discusses consolidation reforms

The state House is expected to vote this week on Democratic plans to find savings in the operations of the Legislature. But Republicans are skeptical of a proposal to merge House and Senate business offices and fiscal agencies.

AP source: GM to repay government loan before June

DETROIT –

A person briefed on the matter says General Motors Co. CEO Ed Whitacre will announce on Wednesday that the company will repay its remaining $4.7 billion in U.S. government loans earlier than expected.

The person says Whitacre will make the announcement at the GM assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas. Then he will head for Washington, D.C. to meet with government officials. The person did not want to be identified because the details have not been announced.

Lansing Community College considering alliance with Boarshead Theater

LANSING, MI –

The Lansing Community College Board of Trustees will vote tonight on a deal that would allow Boarshead Theater to reopen.

Financial problems forced the professional theater company to shut down operations in December.

Under the proposal, Boarshead would use performance and rehearsal space at LCC.

The college would have a say in the selection of four shows per season. The proposal would also include allowing students to learn from and perform with the company's professional actors.

Detroit, MI – In Detroit this past weekend, a group of Michian Democrats got to compare and question their party's prospective candidates for governor.

About 80 people paid $30 apiece for tickets to a breakfast fundraiser that featured state representative Alma Wheeler Smith, state House Speaker Andy Dillon and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero.
