East Lansing, MI – Author and food industry critic Michael Pollan will speak at the Wharton Center at Michigan State University Monday. Pollan has also scheduled a question and answer forum with MSU students. Some agriculture students are looking forward to a spirited discussion.

Lugnuts beat Loons

MIDLAND, MI – The Lansing Lugnuts scored nine unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings to stun the host Great Lakes Loons, 10-8, in the Loons' 2010 home opener at Dow Diamond on Sunday afternoon. The Lugnuts and Loons play the middle affair of their three-game series at 6:05 p.m. tonight in Midland.

Tigers rally to beat Indians 9-8

DETROIT – Carlos Guillen scored the winning run on fill-in closer Chris Perez's wild pitch, capping a three-run ninth inning and giving the Detroit Tigers a 9-8 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.

Guillen doubled in Magglio Ordonez to get the Tigers within one. After Brandon Inge grounded out, Perez (0-1) issued consecutive walks to Ramon Santiago and Johnny Damon to force in the tying run.

His next pitch bounced past Lou Marson, allowing Guillen to scamper home.

Raptors visit Pistons

DETROIT – The Toronto Raptors haven't been making things easy on themselves lately, and their playoff chances took a major hit with a devastating loss last time out.

Mired in a five-game losing streak, the banged-up Raptors (38-42) try to avoid being eliminated from postseason consideration Monday night when they visit a Detroit Pistons team that has already defeated two playoff-bound teams this past week.

The Pistons (26-54) have their most losses since going 28-54 in 1994-95, but they haven't given up.

Stuart goal gives Red Wings win

CHICAGO – Brad Stuart scored at 3:11 of overtime Sunday as the Detroit Red Wings prevented Chicago from winning the Western Conference by beating the Blackhawks 3-2.

Stuart took a nice pass from Dan Cleary to beat Antti Niemi as the Red Wings continued their late-season surge and locked up the No. 5 seed in the conference playoffs. They will face Phoenix in the first round.

Legislature returns to Lansing and budget issues

LANSING, MI – The state Legislature returns from its spring break this week. Lawmakers are expected to dive back into budget disputes.

Funding for the Department of Transportation is quickly becoming one of the more contentious debates in Lansing. Democratic state Representative Lee Gonzales chairs the subcommittee that oversees that budget in the House.

City of Lansing hosts anti-crime summit

Lansing, MI – LANSING, MI (WKAR) - The City of Lansing hosted a public meeting Sunday night to address the recent rash of violence in the city.

AUDIO:

Since March 14, there've been five homicides in metro Lansing and several people have been injured in shootings.

City officials led a discussion about the violence at a meeting that drew about 150 people to Union Missionary Baptist Church.

Asian carp focus of conservation group resolution

CHICAGO –

The National Wildlife Federation has passed a resolution asking for the separation of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds in an effort to stop the spread of invasive species like the Asian carp.

Jordan Lubetkin of the national conservation organization's Great Lakes office said the resolution passed unanimously Friday at the group's annual conference in Houston.

Federation board member Clark Bullard of Illinois calls Asian carp a "grave threat" and says the resolution is a "call for action."

Stupak says he's retiring from Congress

UNDATED – Michigan Democratic Congressman Bart Stupak tells The Associated Press he'll
retire from Congress rather than seek a 10th term this year.

Stupak has drawn stinging criticism from opponents of the recently enacted health care overhaul after leading a bloc of anti-abortion Democrats whose last-minute
support was crucial to its approval by the House.

The Tea Party Express is calling for his defeat at rallies in his sprawling northern Michigan district this week.
