LANSING, MI – The New Lansing City Market is holding its official grand opening this weekend. The market has been open to the public for months, but officials wanted to wait for warmer weather and wanted to give vendors time to settle in to the new space.

The state's largest teachers union marched on the state Capitol Friday to stand against further budget cuts to K-12 schools.

Hundreds of teachers and schools staff members marched up Michigan Avenue toward the Capitol building.

The Michigan Education Association teachers' union president Iris Salters addressed the crowd.

Verlander gets first win, Tigers beat Angels 5-4

ANAHEIM, CA – Justin Verlander labored through five innings for his first win in four starts since signing a long-term contract, and the Detroit Tigers' bullpen came through again in a
5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night.

Carlos Guillen drove in two runs to help the Tigers salvage a split of the four-game series. But the three-time All-Star left in the fifth with a strained left hamstring after he tried to score from second on Scott Sizemore's single.

Lions draft Ndamukong Suh at No. 2 in NFL draft

ALLEN PARK, MI – Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh has been drafted No. 2 overall by the Detroit Lions.

The Heisman Trophy finalist becomes the first defensive tackle to be drafted among the top two picks in the NFL draft since Oakland took Darrell Russell in 1997.

The 6-foot-4, 307-pound Suh was the first defensive player to win The Associated Press College Football Player of the Year award since its inception in 1998. He had 4 1/2 sacks against Texas in the Big 12 title game and finished with 12 sacks for the season.

Man who killed 2 in Owosso gets life sentence

CORUNNA, MI –

A trucker has been sentenced to life in prison for the drive-by killing of an abortion protester and the fatal shooting of a businessman in a mid-Michigan community.

Harlan Drake apologized before getting his punishment Thursday in Shiawasee County Circuit Court, about 25 miles northeast of Lansing. The life sentence was automatic under Michigan law.

Romney endorses Hoekstra in Mich. governor's race

LANSING, MI –

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has endorsed U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra in Michigan's Republican governor's race.

Romney is a Michigan native who won Michigan's 2008 GOP presidential primary before dropping out of the race. He's considered a likely 2012 presidential candidate.

He praised Hoekstra in a statement Thursday for having "the capability and the right policies to get Michigan's economy moving again."

Joblessness up in each major Michigan labor market

LANSING, MI –

New figures show seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates increased in March in each of Michigan's 17 major labor markets.

The state reports Thursday that total employment declined in nearly all regions over the month.

The northeast Lower Peninsula saw the highest March unemployment rate at 20.2%, up from 19.9% in February. The Ann Arbor area was lowest at 9.6%, but that was up from 8.9% the previous month.
Unemployment in the Detroit region was at 15.5%, up from 15.3% in February.
