'Tea Party' ballot dispute continues

LANSING, MI –

More Michigan Republicans are asking questions about how potential candidates were selected for a group that wants on the November ballot under the banner "The Tea Party." At least one wants a grand jury probe. Some Republicans say the group is a fake aimed at hurting them by drawing votes away from true GOP candidates.

Lansing diocese settles, denies priest abuse case

LANSING, MI –

The Catholic Diocese of Lansing has paid $225,000 to a man who says he was molested by a priest in the 1950s but says the accusation can't be substantiated.

The Lansing State Journal reports Wednesday that the man's attorney, David Mittleman, says the man was molested at St. Vincent home in Lansing in 1955 by Monsignor John Slowey.

Slowey died in 1983.

Diocese spokesman Michael Diebold confirmed the payment but says the case differs from another one announced Monday.

Michigan road group pushes for more repair money

LANSING, MI –

A group that wants Michigan to spend more money on road repairs is taking a new approach to lobbying lawmakers.

The Michigan Transportation Team sent state lawmakers and those running for office in November maps of their own districts highlighting major roads that are in poor condition.

The group said Wednesday that inaction by lawmakers over the past two years will make the roads more than $1 billion more expensive to repair than they would have been otherwise.

MI House raids School Aid Fund

LANSING, MI –

The state House has approved a $208 million transfer from the School Aid Fund to fill holes in other areas of the state budget.

AUDIO:
The transfer is part of Governor Granholm's budget plan. Support for the transfer is a result - in part - of federal stimulus money awarded to the state for schools.

State Representative Chuck Moss says it could be dangerous to move any money away from schools.
