LANSING, MI – A new report says Michigan can do more to capture delinquent taxes and child support payments owed by workers in the underground economy.
The report was prepared by a Michigan Supreme Court task force. Among its recommendations - make employers responsible for past-due taxes and child support when they're caught paying their workers off-the-books. And it says employers they should lose their professional licenses if they have any.
Lansing, MI – There are only two weeks left before lawmakers run headlong into a self-imposed deadline to balance the state budget. Now some key negotiators say it appears unlikely the work could be done in that time.
The July 1 deadline was self-imposed to align the state budget with the fiscal years of schools, colleges and local governments, which need to know how much money to expect in state payments in the coming year.
DETROIT – A lawyer for Kwame Kilpatrick says the former Detroit mayor's prison stint should erase his $1 million debt to the city.
Arnold Reed tells The Detroit News that he also will ask the Michigan Court of Appeals to explore what he calls "legal narcissism" and "an obsession" with Kilpatrick.
Kilpatrick was sent to prison for at least 14 months for violating probation in a 2008 criminal case. Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner said Kilpatrick failed to report all assets and turn over money that could have trimmed his restitution.
LANSING, MI – Governor Granholm says Michigan still has too many prisons and is keeping too many inmates locked up for too long. And, she says, that is forcing the state Department of Corrections to exceed its budget by millions of dollars.
