Celebrate Independence Day with WKAR

Both WKAR Radio and TV will offer options to help you celebrate Independence Day in style.

Listen to Morning Edition, on 90.5 FM or AM 870, for the annual reading of The Declaration of Independence.

This annual reading of the declaration by various network correspondents is an NPR tradition. The reading of the 233-year-old document, which was first presented to the Continental Congress by Thomas Jefferson and his committee on July 2, 1776, has become a yearly Morning Edition reading since 1985.

That evening, WKAR-TV celebrates A Capitol Fourth with Jimmy Smits, Barry Manilow, Aretha Franklin, Michael Feinstein, classical pianist Andrew von Oeyen, Natasha Bedingfield, the cast of Jersey Boys, and Sesame Street favorites, including Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Elmo and Cookie Monster. Erich Kunzel conducts the National Symphony Orchestra.

That broadcast begins at 8 p.m. and is repeated at 9:30 p.m.
